Kbal Spean And Banteay Srei Tour Itinerary (Full Day)

Here’s a detailed tour itinerary for visiting Kbal Spean and Banteay Srei, two captivating sites located in Cambodia’s Siem Reap province. This itinerary combines nature exploration with historical and cultural immersion.

8:00 AM: Departure from Siem Reap, after breakfast, we will pick you up from your hotel. First, we’ll assist you in purchasing your Angkor pass, and then we’ll begin our tour:

– Begin your journey early to make the most of the day. Depart from Siem Reap by private car or van, enjoying the scenic countryside as you drive toward Kbal Spean, which is about 57 kilometers from the city.

9:30 AM: Arrive at Kbal Spean: Known as the “River of a Thousand Lingas,” Kbal Spean is an archaeological site set deep within the jungle. After arrival, take a moderate 1.5 km uphill hike through the lush forest. The hike takes around 45 minutes, and along the way, you’ll enjoy the serene surroundings and wildlife.

10:30 AM: Explore Kbal Spean: At the top, marvel at the intricately carved lingas (phallic symbols of fertility) and depictions of Hindu gods etched into the riverbed. The carvings date back to the 11th century and are submerged during the rainy season, but visible during the dry months. This spot offers a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Don’t miss the small waterfall that cascades over the carvings during the wet season.

12:00 PM: Picnic Lunch: Enjoy a packed lunch or snacks in the shade, resting near the waterfall area or at one of the designated picnic spots. You may also opt to eat at a local restaurant near the site.

1:00 PM: Depart for Banteay Srei temple; After a 30-minute drive from Kbal Spean, arrive at the enchanting Banteay Srei, a temple known as the “Citadel of Women” due to the intricacy and elegance of its carvings. This 10th-century Hindu temple is dedicated to Shiva and constructed with pink sandstone, which gives it a unique hue compared to other Angkor temples.

Banteay Srei Tour: Explore the temple’s stunning reliefs and detailed carvings, some of the most elaborate in all of Cambodia. The figures depict scenes from Hindu mythology, including depictions of Shiva, Vishnu, and celestial beings. The smaller scale of Banteay Srei makes it a peaceful site to explore and appreciate the fine craftsmanship.

* After exploring, begin your return journey to Siem Reap: You’ll drive through charming villages, rice paddies and local make and sell palm sugar,  offering opportunities to stop for photos or shop for local crafts or see more attractions such as:

Landmine Museum: Landmine Museum, a deeply moving site founded by former child soldier Aki Ra. The museum provides insight into Cambodia’s landmine crisis and the efforts toward landmine removal.

Highlights: Explore exhibits detailing Cambodia’s tragic history with landmines and hear stories of resilience from those affected.

Banteay Srei Butterfly Center: Visit the enchanting Banteay Srei Butterfly Center, home to hundreds of native Cambodian butterflies. The open-air enclosure offers a peaceful environment to observe these beautiful creatures.

Highlights: Walk through the lush garden and see a variety of butterflies up close while learning about butterfly conservation efforts in Cambodia.

Palm Market: On the way back to Siem Reap, stop at the vibrant Palm Market. This local market is famous for palm products, snacks, and handicrafts.

Highlights: Sample palm sugar candies, see how palm fruit is processed, and pick up a few souvenirs.

– Cambodia Shooting Range: Cambodia Shooting Range: Experience a thrilling stop at the Cambodia Shooting Range, where you can learn about and safely handle a range of firearms under strict supervision. This facility allows visitors to engage in a unique activity, with options to fire weapons in a controlled environment, giving a perspective on Cambodia’s historical and military backdrop.

Arrive Back in Siem Reap: Return to your hotel or continue exploring Siem Reap’s vibrant nightlife and dining options. If you still have energy, consider visiting the night market or enjoying dinner at a local restaurant.

Tips for a Great Kbal Spean Mountain Tour:

– Tickets: Buy your Angkor Pass ahead of time (1-day: $37, 3-day: $62, or 7-day: $72 options). The ticket is required for all temples in the park.

Dress Code: Wear appropriate clothing to enter the temples (shoulders and knees must be covered).

– Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Essentials: Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Transportation: For a comfortable journey, consider hiring an air-conditioned car or minivan, as it’s a longer drive with mountainous terrain. If you’d like a more informative experience, we recommend hiring a guide to share insights and history during the trip.
