KEP ATTRACTIONS
Kep province (Khmer: ខេត្តកែប, Kêb [kaep]) is the smallest province (khaet) of Cambodia covering 336 km2 (130 sq mi), with a population of 41,798. It is one of the newest Cambodian provinces, together with Pailin, Sihanoukville and Tboung Khmum, created by Royal Decree on 22 December 2008, which separated Kep Municipality & Damnak Chang’aeur District from the Kampot province, as well as adjusting several provincial borders. It is both the smallest and least populous province of Cambodia. The provincial capital is Kep District and the province contains the Kep National Park.
KAMPONG TRACH
Kampong Trach District (Khmer: ស្រុកកំពង់ត្រាច) is one of 8 districts in Kampot Province and it is located at the eastern part bordering Vietnam to the east, Banteay Meas District to the north, Kep Province to the west and the Gulf of Thailand to the south.
Anlong Pring Crane Reserve is a small protected area in Kampong Trach near the Vietnamese border on the edge of the Mekong Delta. Sarus cranes nest in the dry forest north of here in the wet season. During the dry season, a few hundred of these cranes take up residence at this reserve. The reserve is an IBA protection at 217 hectares, established on 6 January 2011. There is a similar sanctuary in the adjacent Takéo Province since 2007.
A road border crossing into Vietnam is located in this district. The border crossing is called the Prek Chak International Border Checkpoint. The checkpoint on the Vietnamese side is called Ha Tien International Border Gate. The nearest Vietnamese town to the border crossing is Ha Tien.
KEP NATIONAL PARK
Kep National Park is a national park in Cambodia’s Kep Province that was established in 1993 and covers an area of 66.64 km2 (25.73 sq mi) The nearest town lies at Krong Kaeb.
The park includes a small mountain range with tracks and trails which are popular with tourists.[citation needed] The trails boast incredible views of Phu Quoc and the Bokor Ranges on the south and west sides, and views across islands of the vast Vietnamese marine reserve in Kiên Giang to the east side.
KEP BEACH
Kep was Cambodia’s top seaside destination until eclipsed in the 1960s by Sihanoukville (and, soon after, decades of civil war). The town is full of ruined shells of old villas, destroyed in the Khmer Rouge days and during the subsequent Civil War and stripped down by the leaving Vietnamese army. Today’s Kep has recently become established as a Khmer holiday spot and is slowly being rediscovered by travelers. The once very poor Kep beach is now being filled up with snow-white sand from Otres Beach and is extended to 50m, still the main beach is located at the idyllic Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island, 20min by long tail boat), just off the coast. The charm of this coastal resort lies in its peacefulness, its National Park, and its seafood.
PHNOM SAR SEAR
Phnom Sar Sear is a fabulous natural and cultural resort situated at a distance of 14 km. from the provincial town of Kampot.
Phnom Sar Sear consists of three small mountains spread across a total land area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers. The mountain rises to a height of around 40 meters. Tourists can visit the mountain caves here. Among the caves, the cave of Phnom Ach Pro Chiev and particularly, the cave of Phnom Dam Rey Sar, are the most well known ones. On the mountaintop of Phnom Sar Sear, you will find a colorful stupa built in 1964 by the princess Rasmey Sou Phoan. The stupa is a holy worshipping place where it is believed the cremated ash of the Buddha are kept. On the mountaintop are sweeping views of rice fields, forests, local villages, islands and the vast sea. The mountain is also a worshipping place for people who come here to pray.
TEUK CHHOU RAPIDS AND ZOO
Teuk Chhu is located in Snomprampi village, Makprang commune, Kampot district, about 8 kilometers north of Kampot provincial town. Its main attraction is a stream that flows from Phnom Damrei via Phnom Kamchay. The cool, clear water flows over large rocks year round. This is a good place for swimming or bathing. There are many kinds of decicious fruit available, including durian, mangosteen, rambutan, mak prang, pineapple, grape fruit, custard apple and coconut. Only the durian, however, is available year round. Not far from Teuk Chhu is a zoo and plantation organized by His Excellency Nhim Vanda.
